The Kulen Mountains are regarded to as the prime supplier of natural construction materials during the Angkor Kingdom as it consists primarily of sandstone. Phnom Kulen is by the Khmers regarded to as sacred as this was the birthplace of the ancient Khmer Empire as King Jayavarman II proclaimed its independence from Java at Kulen.
