Day 2: Vientiane city tour by TukTuk

Depart from the hotel by TukTuk and visit four of Vientiane’s amazing highlights. Start with Vat Sisaket, the only temple left intact after the Siamese invasion of Laos in 1828. It shelters hundreds of statues of Buddha in its walls and is an infamous landmark in the city. Continue to Vat Phra Keo, which is now used as a religious museum where Lao and Khmer works of art are exhibited. It used to host the “Emerald Buddha” that is now on display in Bangkok’s Royal Palace. Later in the day, visit That Luang, the holiest place in Laos and object of an amazing pilgrimage each November. The structure is iconic and represented on all bank notes and official stamps of Laos. The golden stupa is build on a small hill and visible from afar. Its compound is just as impressive as its sight with many relaxing corners from where to observe the splendid architecture. Finally, visit the Patuxai Monument, also called Anousavari, and enjoy a panoramic view over the city from its roof. It is Vientiane’s own Arc de Triomphe that is located at the top of Lan Xang Avenue, the Champs Elysees of the Lao capital. After lunch (not included), visit the COPE center and learn more about Laos and a part of its history that is not very well known among most visitors: the Secret War. Learn all you need to know about the complications and challenges that the Laotian people faced after the war. End the day on a high note and visit the eccentric Buddha Park, which is located around 30 minutes from the city by car. The locals refer to the park as Vat Xieng Khuan. The park contains numerous religious sculptures that mix up Hindu and Buddhist styles. With over 200 statues along the Mekong River bank, it certainly is a very intriguing sight to behold.
Return to Vientiane afterwards and enjoy a delicious ice cream on the way back to the hotel.

Day 7: Luang Prabang city tour

Get up before the sun rises and head by TukTuk to the peninsula of Lunag Prabang to witness and attend the alms giving. At approximately six o’clock in the morning, long lines of monks and novices stroll the streets of the town center to collect their daily food subsistence from local worshippers. This ancient ritual is locally known as “tak bat”. Hundreds of monks, all dressed in their bright orange ropes walk by to collect their alms, which allows for amazing picture opportunities. Your guide will ensure that some alms can be handed over by you as well. Continue afterwards with a visit to the open‐air food market that is held daily in the streets nearby the former Royal Palace. Observe how the freshest ingredients are displayed and collected before returning to the hotel for breakfast.

After breakfast, explore Luang Prabang. Start with a visit to the National Museum, which used to be the former Royal Palace. Inside the complex of the museum you will see the “Prabang”, or the sacred golden statue, giving its name to the town. Continue to Vat Mai, the former royal temple, which is Luang Prabang’s largest and most decorated temple. Not far stands Vat Sene, which is considered to be one of the most beautiful temples in town, with its red walls and golden bas‐reliefs. The nearby Heritage House is a perfect example of Luang Prabang’s traditional building style and is made of wood and stands on poles. Admire the complicated architecture style and learn why many houses in Laos, but also in neighboring countries were often build on poles. Visit afterwards the TAEC, the Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre. The center depicts Laos‘ rich ethnic diversity with themed rotating exhibits. It is hosted in the former French colonial mansion of a judge. Continue to Vat Xieng Thong, one of the most emblematic temples in Laos. It is located at the top of the peninsula, where the Mekong and Nam Khan Rivers meet. If time allows, visit also Vat Visoun and Vat Aham. Both are historically important pagoda’s based on what they represent.

In the afternoon, join a traditional Hmong ceremony. Life is seen as a continuous circle of birth and rebirth, and the Hmong believe that there are two worlds which are physical and spiritual that coexists side by side. We believe in many types of spirits including ancestral spirits, house spirits and spirits in the natural world. (More information can be found down below!)

At the end of the tour, climb Mount Phousi in time for an incredible sunset view of the town and its surroundings. After sunset, climb down the stairs and find yourself in the middle of the local hill‐tribe night market, which every night lightens up the central part of town.
In the evening join the Garavek story telling program. It has its aim is to promote and preserve the local traditional stories – myths, legends, and folktales. Starting their performances at 5PM daily, a selection of traditional Lao stories is presented in an intimate twenty‐five seat theatre. The stories are told in English, by a Lao storyteller, with the live musical accompaniment of the khene, which is a traditional Laotian musical instrument made out of bamboo. Learn about the origins, according to folklore, of local landmarks such as Mount Phou Si, the Mekong and the Nam Khan River, as well as learning the stories behind legendary Laotian characters such as Xieng Mieng, the archetypal trickster, and Fa Ngum, the first king of Lan Xang. After the performance, return to the hotel for a free evening.

Extra informatie:

According to Hmong cosmology, the human body is the host for a number of souls. If one or more of these souls are isolated and separated from the body for example it was frightened away or kidnapped by an evil force. This can cause disease, depression and death. Generally, disease is understood as disruption in balanced, dynamic inter LPQ action of soul, spirits, and persons.
As the results, when it comes to treating illnesses, the Hmong believe in the healing power of shamans instead of doctors. The shaman is the traditional healer who can convey the displeasure of God for the behaviour of people and navigates the spirit world to determine and treat the spiritual causes of disease. The purpose of this ceremony is to cure the illness of a person. There are many situations when a Hmong shaman has to perform such as to treat an illness, to add longer life to a person, to block any bad spirit from a person, to bless a house, to ease the anger spirits or to call the souls back when a person’s spirits has taken by a malevolent spirit.
Shaman attempt to heal illnesses through offerings to the spirits such as with paper or meals or with a sacrifice of a chicken, pig, crab or other animal. In Hmong culture, the souls of sacrificial animals are connected to human souls, so a shaman uses an animal’s soul to support or protect the patient’s soul.
Although you believe in a different religious, we are happy to share and help with any of your problems or concerns or questions that you may have and would like it to be solved.

Today, wood carving is a slowly dying trade, kept alive by the temples which periodically order statues of Buddha.
This exclusive experience is run by a master wood carver who used to carve pieces at the palace for the royal family and often points to a plethora of works at the National museum which is also the ground of the former palace. Don’t miss this experience!
This course is over 4 hours so you might want to bring a snack and some water in case you get hungry 🙂 There’s also a nice restaurant nearby should you need to buy anything. (join‐in wood carving)

The statues vary in size from a few centimeters tall to the size of a human being. Return to Luang Prabang and end the day at Vat Xieng Thong. The pagoda is one of the most emblematic temples in Laos and is located at the top of the peninsula where the Mekong and Nam Khan Rivers meet.
