Day 1: Arrival in Chiang Rai (Thailand)

Arrive in the morning at the international airport of Chiang Rai and meet your guide and driver outside the arrival hall.
From here, transfer about 90 minutes to the village of Ban Kiu Karn. A village of the Hmong and Lisu minorities.
In the afternoon, feel free to walk around and meet with the local villagers, the shaman or the weavers producing traditional clothing.

Day 2: Transfer to Luang Namtha (Laos)

After breakfast you will be transferred without guide to the Thai/Laos border crossing in Chiang Khong/Houay Xay. Once you passed the Thai immigration, take the shuttle bus (USD 1/person) by yourself to get to the Laos immigration check point. Most nationalities can obtain their visa on arrival (USD 30‐ 40/person).
Your Laotian English speaking guide is waiting for you at the immigration.
Continue afterwards to Golden Triangle, where Laos, Myanmar and Thailand shake hands. After lunch (on your own expenses) continue to Luang Namtha. On the way we’ll have several stops to see ethnic villages.

Day 3: Luang Namtha Trekking

Start at 9h00 at the office by Tuk Tuk to Ban Hua Na, where you will pick up your local guide and begin your trek. The trek leads up the mountain and deep into the preserved areas. You will be able to see old and dense forest, many kind of bamboos, wild rattans, cardamoms and other NTFP (Non Timber Forest Products).
During the trek, your guide will share his experience about traditional medicine, animal tracks, edible leaves, and other things of interest. After 1.5 hours you will stop to have a traditional Lantén lunch along the walking path in the forest. After lunch, you will continue to the top of the mountain where you will gaze at a pristine forest and snap up an excellent panorama of the Luang Namtha valley.
Afterwards you walk down from the mountain, straight to the Nam Dee waterfall. In the village of Nam Dee, you will be able to participate in activities with the locals, such as: Lantén traditional weaving (daily), paper making of bamboo (Jan‐Mar), and organic dyeing of cloth (Nov‐mar). We then head back to Luang Namtha by TukTuk.

Day 4: Transfer to Mueang Xay

Leave Luang Namtha after breakfast and transfer to Oudomxay, the commercial capital of the North. The Chinese influence here, can be seen very clearly. If you wish, you can climb Mount Phou That, to enjoy a beautiful view over the area. Continue afterwards to Mueang Xay.

Day 5: A day with the locals

Meet your guide after breakfast and visit a local market. Observe the local people doing their daily groceries. After the market visit, we drive to the sacred Phasingkham Buddha temple, visit a salt mine as well as a hot spring. A 32 km long drive over a dirty and bumpy road, will bring us to Ao Na Village. Observe the local Akkha people working on their farms along the road. Once arrived in Ao Na we will enjoy a local lunch before we start our exploration walk around the village. Your guide will explain you the local culture and traditions of the Akkha minority. The local people are well known for their incredible weaving skills. From a former French airfield, we will enjoy a stunning view over the village.
At around 2pm we’ll leave Ao Na and drive to the village of Tauser. This is a Hmong hill tribe village, where its people have a complete different culture again. Feel free to enter a house and see how the people life. You will return to your hotel in the second half of the afternoon.

Day 6: Transfer to Nong Khiaw

Leave Mueang Xay after breakfast and transfer to Nong Khiaw. On the way, we will pass a beautiful limestone sceneries. We will stop in several places on the way.

Day 7: The 100 waterfalls trekking

We’ll start the day with a boat ride on the Nam Ou to a small village where you can learn about the way of life along this river. Then we’ll trek through small streams and rice paddies to reach the base of the 100 waterfalls. The next few hours you will see only water and jungle and hear the sound of clear waterfall cascades. The pools around you are very inviting for a refreshing splash.
Your guide will lead you through the cascades and prepare a local style lunch on the falls in the middle of it all. Then we’ll take a small villagers’ trail from the top of the falls back down into the valley; along the way, you’ll take in views of the landscapes of the Nam Ou valley.
Hiking back to the village, we’ll have more time to observe the daily life here before heading back by a small boat to Nong Khiaw.

Extra informatie:

Preparation: Bring trekking sandals which can get wet and a jacket for the return is recommended as it can get very chilly in the evening.
You should be in good shape and confident on uneven terrain for this beautiful tour. Do not wear flip‐flops on this tour.

Day 8: Transfer to Luang Prabang

We leave Nong Khiaw after breakfast and continue our tour to Luang Prabang. Around noon we will arrive in Ban Pak You. We will cross the Mekong River by boat to reach the caves of Pak Ou. Admire the thousands of gold lacquered Buddha statues that were left behind by pilgrims dating back dozens of years ago. The statues vary in size from a few centimeters tall to the size of a human being. Climb back on board the boat and sail to Luang Prabang.

Day 9: Luang Prabang trekking

This trek passing true Khmu villages, offers a great opportunity to gain a true insight into the rural life of the local villagers. Trek across rice paddies, farm land and forest and experience the true natural beauty of the Luang Prabang Province. Enjoy a home‐stay to experience real insight into the culture of ethnic minorities and the spectacular Kuang Si waterfall on the day two.
We leave Luang Prabang in the morning and drive through a beautiful countryside to Ban Nong Touk. Here we spend some time to learn about the life in the rural lowlands of the Lao and Khmu communities before setting off trekking! The trek leads us first through rice paddies and pineapple plantations before entering the dense jungle which is home to a remarkable diversity of tree species!

After two hours of hiking we reach the first peak of the mountain range, where we stop for a while to enjoy the great views of the surrounding landscape and enjoy a local style picnic lunch. As we continue onwards we soon reach another peak, before the trail begins to head downwards in to the forest. As we arrive in the forest the chances to see wild animals and their tracks are good, the forest is home to a vast selection of different species! Along the way we pass a tiny settlement of 5 Hmong families before continuing onwards.

The last leg of the day is a short half hour walk to Ban Long Lao which is where we stay overnight. Here you have the opportunity to get a real insight into the culture of the two ethnic minorities (Hmong and Khmu) who live here together in harmony.

Day 10: Luang Prabang trekking

After breakfast we follow a trail into some very steep sections of the forest. Along the way we explore a cave which was used as an improvised bomb shelter by the locals during the second Indochina war. Continuing onwards from the cave one more hour of trekking, brings us to one of the springs that feeds Kuang Si, here a beautiful pool full of sacred fish can be found. After descending from the top of the waterfall we enjoy a Lao style picnic lunch next to the waterfall.

After lunch the afternoon is spent bathing and relaxing by the turquoise pools below the waterfall. It is worth to visit the nearby bear rescue center which is home to bears which are cared for after being rescued from bile farms and wildlife traffickers. Before returning back to Luang Prabang, we take a short walk to the nearby Ban Thapene. It is a Khmu village that lies nestled around some of the most beautiful pools of Tad Kuang Si.

Day 11: Luang Prabang departure

Your driver will pick you up at your hotel and transfer you to the airport of Luang Prabang.
